Childhood:
My name is Craig Rosenkranz. I was born in Sydney, Australia. During my early childhood my family lived in several states and countries. My teenage years were spent on the Northern Beaches of Sydney. I always enjoyed outdoor activities such as sport, camping and travel. I participated in all types of sports, individual and team. I especially enjoyed individual sports, surfing, skateboarding, water skiing, rock climbing, motor bikes..... and as most teenage boys do, I liked an adrenaline rush.
Accident:
My friends and I, were always looking for a rush. This craving for adrenaline, eventually led me to have a serious accident. In 1986, racing two friends on my bicycle, I came speeding around a corner, saw a ramp, decided to jump it, misjudged the jump and broke my neck becoming quadriplegic.
Adapting:
My life was turned upside down in a matter of seconds. I had to Adapt to my changed situation. I had wanted to use my hands for work and take part in sport. Upon leaving hospital, I made a decision not to go home and live with my family, instead I moved into a transitional care facility. Here I lived with other people in wheelchairs and learnt from their experiences. I eventually made a decision not to dwell on what I had lost but to focus on what I could still achieve. I would spend time alone and learn to be more independent. I observed processes and how things worked more closely. If I couldn't find equipment that suited my needs, I would design and build it with friends.
Travel:
I love travelling and seeing new places it stimulates my senses. I have spent years travelling: living on the road, camping, visiting van parks, relaxing in bungalows, luxuriating in resorts and using an eclectic variety of transport.
Plans:
Travel in the pursuit of adventure. Conduct research and development with businesses and departments involved in the travel industry. Work in a consultative role giving accurate and constructive evaluation to help cater better for the needs of people in wheelchairs. Use my adventures as a platform to motivate others to overcome obstacles and achieve their end goals.
Focus:
I was able to adapt to my situation because of my determination. My biggest rewards have come from the knowledge that I am strong enough to overcome challenges and accomplish anything.
